Formula & assumptions
Cycle time = cutting time + rapid time + tool-change timeInputs are normalized before calculation and converted back to the selected output units.
This estimate excludes acceleration, probing, spindle orientation, dwell, control look-ahead, loading, inspection, and unplanned delays.

In this calculator, cutting length, approach/overtravel and rapid distance are per pass. Number of passes multiplies those distances. Tool changes are entered as the total number of change events for the job; they are not multiplied by passes.
With lengths in mm and speeds in mm/min: cutting minutes = (cut length + approach) × passes / cutting feed; rapid minutes = rapid distance × passes / effective rapid rate; tool-change minutes = changes × seconds per change / 60.
| Component | Inputs and calculation | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Cut and approach | (100 + 5) mm × 2 / 500 mm/min | 0.42 min = 25.2 s |
| Rapid moves | 50 mm × 2 / 5000 mm/min | 0.02 min = 1.2 s |
| Tool changes | 1 × 8 seconds | 8.0 s |
| Total included time | 25.2 + 1.2 + 8.0 | 34.4 s = 0.573333 min |
The reciprocal gives 3600/34.4 = 104.65 ideal cycles per hour, not guaranteed parts shipped. If handling and inspection add 20 seconds per cycle, the illustrative total becomes 54.4 seconds and 66.18 cycles per hour before breaks, rejects or downtime.
Compare the same operation boundary with a CAM estimate and a timed proven cycle. Record omitted probing, spindle ramping, dwell and acceleration separately; use measured effective rapid time when short moves never reach maximum rapid speed.
