Knurling Calculator: Straight-Pitch Blank Diameter

Find a nearby idealized blank diameter whose circumference contains a whole number of circular pitches. This calculator is deliberately limited to straight circular-pitch geometry.

Calculate and check

Default values are examples. Replace them with verified inputs for your job. Changing a unit or mode does not convert existing inputs.

Model and input definition

For blank diameter D and circumferential pitch p, ideal tooth count N = πD/p. Round N to the nearest positive integer, then calculate D* = Np/π. Adjacent feasible geometric diameters differ by p/π. Enter pitch measured around the circumference, in mm—not an axial projection of a diagonal pattern.

Diametral pitch counts teeth per unit diameter and is a different system. A diamond or diagonal knurl may need a helix-angle correction and supplier-specific tracking guidance. Do not insert a diametral-pitch number into the circular-pitch field.

Worked example

A target blank diameter of 20 mm and circular pitch of 1 mm gives 62.8319 theoretical teeth. The nearest integer is 63, for an idealized diameter of 20.053523 mm. The neighboring 62- and 64-tooth diameters are 19.735213 and 20.371833 mm.

If the drawing or remaining stock cannot accommodate that diameter, this arithmetic does not authorize changing the part. It only exposes the relationship between circumference and pitch. A production trial may find a different pre-knurl diameter because material displacement changes contact conditions.

Tracking is a process check, not just a number

Form knurling displaces material and can enlarge the outside diameter; cut knurling removes material. Wheel condition, alignment, penetration, blank hardness, feed and rigidity affect whether a pattern tracks cleanly. A whole-number starting ratio is not a guarantee against double tracking.

Confirm the wheel marking and pitch system with the knurl manufacturer, then make a controlled trial using its setup guidance. Measure the final diameter and pattern against the drawing. This tool does not calculate tooth depth, final outside diameter or safe machine loads.

Match the wheel marking to the pitch input

This is a straight circular-pitch blank-diameter calculator. Before entering a number, identify whether the wheel documentation gives millimeters per circumferential tooth, teeth per inch, or diametral pitch. Those are not interchangeable labels. For an explicitly straight circular-pitch wheel specified at 20 teeth per inch, pitch is 25.4/20 = 1.27 mm. Do not use this conversion for a diametral-pitch marking or an uncorrected diagonal pitch.

Compare diameters against the drawing

For a 12 mm target blank and 0.8 mm circular pitch, theoretical tooth count is π × 12/0.8 = 47.1239. Choosing 47 teeth gives a geometric diameter of 11.968452 mm; 48 teeth gives 12.223100 mm. Neither answer overrides a finished-size tolerance. Compare the candidate with available stock, predicted material displacement and the required final knurl diameter.

Record the wheel part number, pitch system, straight/diagonal pattern, forming/cutting process, blank diameter and measured finished diameter during a controlled trial. Keep these records separate from this idealized arithmetic. Dorian’s knurling guide discusses tracking and process-dependent blank preparation; it is not evidence that a whole-number ratio guarantees a good pattern.

Use the turning calculator only for arithmetic after obtaining the actual knurl manufacturer’s process data.
